Students
Twelve students were enrolled in Urban Affairs Reporting for the Fall 2010 semester at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University.
At the end of the semester in December, nine of them were able to travel as a group to Grahamstown, South Africa, to report there. That’s the “Grahamstown” piece of this project.
During the semester the students wrote stories for The Stand monthly newspaper and website, which covers the South Side of Syracuse, N.Y. While they did that, they also produced content for the “South Side” piece of this website. And, they interviewed each other before they left about what they expected to find in Grahamstown and to learn from the trip.
On the students’ pages, they discuss their expectations in the video pieces. They wrote about the experience when they returned to Syracuse, and those short reflections are posted as well.
The “big idea” behind all of this: To produce video profiles of the residents of two similar cities on opposite sides of the globe.
Our students found that while the cities were a world apart, the people were not. People — indeed — share much. The hope to live well, so that others who follow will live better.
